The best language exchange apps for Spanish connect you with native speakers who want to learn your language in return. Tandem is best for voice and video calls, HelloTalk for meeting lots of partners and joining voice rooms, Speaky for a completely free app, and ConversationExchange.com or Meetup for meeting people face to face.

We are Speak Better Spanish, a coaching school, not an exchange app, so we did not rank ourselves here. You will find us in a separate section near the end, for when you want guided conversation. Every app fact below comes from the app’s own website or its US App Store listing on October 25, 2026. App plans change, so check before you pay.

Key Takeaways

  • An exchange is free practice: half the time in Spanish, half in your language.
  • Text chat is a good start. Voice and video calls are where speaking improves.
  • Agree on how you want to be corrected before you start.
  • Free apps are great for volume, but nobody plans the conversation for you.
  • Keep personal details private and meet new partners in public places.

Knowing the rule is the easy part. Using it mid-conversation is where most adults freeze. In a free roadmap session, a coach hears you speak and gives you a plan for what to practice next.

1. Tandem: best for voice and video calls

Tandem calls itself the app where millions of people teach each other. You can talk by text, voice note, audio or video call, and partners can correct your messages and comment on them. There is a translation tool and group audio sessions called Parties. It is free to sign up, and the App Store lists an optional Tandem Pro, including a 12-month plan at $69.99.

2. HelloTalk: best for meeting lots of partners

HelloTalk is built around chatting with native speakers, with built-in translation and transliteration tools. It also has voice rooms, where several people talk at once, and livestreams. The app is free, and VIP was listed on the US App Store at $12.99 a month or $79.99 a year.

3. Speaky: best completely free app

Speaky connects you with native speakers for text chat and voice messages. Its website says it is completely free, with no hidden fees or subscriptions. The App Store listing says it connects people from 195 countries and more than 170 languages, and the app was updated in September 2026.

4. ConversationExchange.com: best for meeting in person

This free site helps you find a partner for three kinds of exchange: meeting face to face with native speakers in your area, writing as pen pals, or chatting by text, voice or video on apps like Skype. If you live somewhere with Spanish speakers nearby, it is a great way to practice in person.

5. Meetup: best for group conversation

Meetup’s Spanish topic page listed 480 groups and more than 731,000 members when we checked. Each group sets its own format and any cost, so read the group page before you join.

When you want guided conversation: Speak Better Spanish

This is our own service, and it is not an exchange app. We include it because exchanges are wonderful for practice, but half the time is in English, and your partner is not a teacher. Some people want a conversation in Spanish the whole time, with someone who knows where they get stuck.

Our conversation sessions are 30 minutes, one to one, in Spanish with Hannah, Arturo or Jacky. You talk about your real life while your coach keeps you going and corrects what matters. The recording and your notes come after. One small thing to practice, nothing to hand in. Our site counts more than 1,000 conversation sessions since 2017. If you want more structure, see our coaching or small group conversation classes.

How we picked these apps

  • Each app or site had to be active, with a recent update or working pages on October 25, 2026.
  • We looked for real ways to speak, not only text chat.
  • We only used facts from each official site or US App Store listing. We did not give star ratings.
  • We left out apps that had not been updated in a long time.

How to get the most out of a language exchange

  1. Split the time evenly and use a timer, so both of you get your half.
  2. Agree on corrections first: one or two per minute is plenty.
  3. Pick a topic from your real life before the call.
  4. Write down the two sentences you struggled with and say them again afterward.
  5. Talk with the same partner a few times. It gets easier every time.

If you have no one to talk to yet, start with how to practice speaking Spanish alone. If you live in Mexico or are moving there, read how friendship really works in Mexico. And if your mind goes blank, why you freeze when speaking Spanish explains what is happening.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best language exchange app for Spanish?

Tandem is the best choice for most people because it has voice and video calls plus correction tools. HelloTalk is a good choice if you want many partners and voice rooms. Speaky is completely free. For meeting in person, try ConversationExchange.com or a local Meetup group.

Are language exchange apps free?

Most are free to use. Tandem and HelloTalk are free, with optional paid plans for extra features. Speaky says it is completely free with no subscriptions, and ConversationExchange.com is free. Meetup groups vary, since each group sets its own format.

Can you learn Spanish with a language exchange?

A language exchange is great practice, especially once you know the basics. It gives you real conversations for free. It works best alongside a course or coach, because your partner is not a teacher and half the time is spent in your language.

How do I find a Spanish speaking partner?

Download Tandem or HelloTalk, set Spanish as the language you are learning, and message a few people with something specific about yourself. For in-person practice, search ConversationExchange.com or Meetup for your city. Expect to try several partners before one fits.

Is a language exchange or a tutor better?

An exchange is free and gives you lots of practice, but nobody plans the conversation. A tutor or coach costs money, keeps the whole session in Spanish and corrects you on purpose. Many learners use both: exchanges for volume and a coach for focused practice.

“I visited Colombia back in 2023 and at the time I had pretty limited Spanish. I was able to order food, but I was stumbling through conversations. I returned in March [2026] and was able to have in depth conversations with our host, the owner of a restaurant, and someone who worked at a bookstore to name a few. It was night and day and it made a huge difference.”

Chris K., student since 2024

“She is able to do what native Spanish speakers aren't: she answers the question, why? Hannah has helped to make sense of it.”
