Meet Lupita

Lupita is a veterinarian from Mexico, a friend of mine for years, and the person behind most of what you read and hear from Speak Better Spanish. She is not a Spanish teacher, which is the whole reason she is here. She can tell you how people actually talk.

Not a teacher, and that is the point

Teachers explain the rules. Lupita explains what people say. When I need to know whether a phrase sounds natural in Mexico, whether it is regional, or what a word actually means to someone who grew up with it, I ask her. Enough of those conversations piled up that we started recording them.

What Lupita does here

Lupita handles the publishing side of Speak Better Spanish: the blog posts, the newsletter, the podcast episodes, the social posts, and the weekly resources that go out to students. The posts come out of our conversations and they go out under her name, because they are her explanations.

Real Mexican Spanish, from a real Mexican

In the series Lupita covers what a textbook leaves out. Why a stranger will start a conversation with you at a bus station. What Mexicans actually want to ask a foreigner. Why a street dog is a “perro caramelo”, why a cat is a “michi”, and what animals say in Spanish.
