Best Way to Learn Spanish Fast: 7 Methods, Ranked

Written by Guadalupe Pérez

Guadalupe Pérez (Lupita) is from Mexico and runs publishing at Speak Better Spanish. She writes up the everyday Mexican Spanish that comes out of her conversations with Hannah Pinkerton, our lead fluency coach.

The best way to learn Spanish fast is to speak it every week from the start, with someone who corrects what matters, and to fill the days between with listening and review. Full-time immersion is quicker if you can take the time: the US Foreign Service Institute plans about 30 weeks of full-time study for Spanish.

We are Speak Better Spanish, a coaching school, so the first method below is what we do, and we say so. The other methods do not depend on us. Where we give a time, it comes from the source we name, checked on October 25, 2026. Nobody can promise you fluency in a month, and we will not either.

Key Takeaways

  • Speaking early, every week, is what gets adults talking fastest.
  • Full-time immersion is the fastest route overall, but it takes months, not days.
  • Daily listening and flashcards make your speaking time count for more.
  • Twenty or thirty minutes every day beats a long session once in a while.
  • Decide what fast means for you. Getting by on a trip and full fluency are very different goals.

Knowing the rule is the easy part. Using it mid-conversation is where most adults freeze. In a free roadmap session, a coach hears you speak and gives you a plan for what to practice next.

1. Speak every week with a coach: best for speaking fast (ours)

This is our method, so take it as our own view. Many of our students are intermediate. They know the grammar. What slows them down is that they rarely say it out loud. Speaking every week, from the first week, with a coach who notices where you get stuck, is the fastest way we know to close that gap.

Hannah, Arturo and Jacky coach adults on Zoom, in real Mexican Spanish. A 60-minute coaching session is where you learn something new. A 30-minute conversation session is where you use it while it is fresh, talking about your own life, with one small thing to practice afterward and nothing to hand in. You get the recording and notes after every session. See how conversation sessions work.

We will be honest about the pace. When we counted 1,896 of our own one-to-one sessions, committed students took a median of 33 sessions, and those who reached ten sessions stayed with us a median of about 17 months. The students who got comfortable were the ones who kept a weekly slot, not the ones who did the most in one month. You can read the full count. Prices are on our pricing page.

2. Full-time immersion: the fastest route if you can take the time

The US Foreign Service Institute, which trains American diplomats, puts Spanish in its first group, languages close to English, and plans about 30 weeks of study. Its typical week is 23 hours in class and 17 hours of self-study, aiming for a score of 3 on the government’s ILR scale for speaking and listening. That is roughly what fast looks like when learning Spanish is your full-time job.

You can get a smaller version of this with an immersion trip or a school in a Spanish-speaking country. Our list of the best Spanish immersion programs for adults covers options in Mexico, including our own La Paz trip.

3. Intensive classes: best for a short, serious burst

If you cannot move abroad for months, a few weeks of intensive class gets you close. Instituto Cultural Oaxaca runs 20 hours of Spanish a week, and the Spanish Institute of Puebla’s one-to-one program is 30 hours a week. Online, the same idea means booking several sessions a week for a month instead of one.

4. Daily listening: best for understanding fast speech

A lot of adults can read Spanish but lose the thread when people talk at normal speed. Daily listening to Spanish you can mostly follow fixes that. Dreaming Spanish is built on this idea and measures progress in hours of input. It recommends waiting until level 6 of its roadmap to start speaking, so pair listening with real speaking if speed is your goal. Our passive listening guide explains how to fit it into your day.

5. Spaced repetition flashcards: best for remembering words

Anki is a free flashcard app for computers and Android. It asks how well you remembered each card and schedules the next review for when you are most likely to forget it. Put in the phrases you need for your own life, not a list of a thousand random words. If words keep slipping away, read why you forget Spanish so quickly.

6. Language exchange: best free speaking practice

A language exchange pairs you with a Spanish speaker who wants to practice English. It costs nothing and gets you talking. It is less structured than a lesson, and your partner may not correct you, so treat it as extra practice. When you have nobody to talk to, try our ideas for practicing Spanish alone.

7. Apps: best for starting a daily habit

Apps are good for the first weeks: a daily streak, basic words and simple grammar. They rarely get people speaking on their own. We wrote about why in are language apps enough to become fluent.

How we ranked these methods

  • We ranked by how quickly each method gets an adult speaking in real conversations.
  • We only gave times we could source, and we named the source.
  • We did not promise results. How fast you go depends on how much you practice.
  • We said plainly which method is ours.

A realistic plan to learn Spanish fast

  • Every day: 20 to 30 minutes of listening or flashcards.
  • Every week: at least one real conversation with a coach, tutor or exchange partner.
  • Every month: look back at what you can say now that you could not say before.
  • If you can, once: a week or more of immersion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to learn Spanish?

Full-time immersion is the fastest, if you can take the time. The US Foreign Service Institute plans about 30 weeks of full-time study for Spanish. For most working adults, the fastest realistic route is speaking every week with a coach or tutor, plus daily listening and flashcards between sessions.

Can you learn Spanish in 3 months?

How far you get in three months depends on how much you practice and how often you speak. Fluency takes longer. The Foreign Service Institute plans about 30 weeks of full-time study for Spanish, with 23 hours of class a week.

How many hours a day should I study Spanish to learn fast?

Consistency matters more than long sessions. Twenty to thirty minutes of listening or review every day, plus at least one real conversation a week, will move you faster than a few long sessions a month. If you can do more, add speaking time first.

Is immersion the best way to learn Spanish fast?

It is the fastest, because you hear and use Spanish all day. But it takes time off and money. A short immersion trip or a few weeks at a school in Mexico works well once you already have some Spanish, so you spend the trip speaking instead of starting from zero.

Can I learn Spanish fast with just an app?

Apps are good for a daily habit and the basics, but they rarely get people speaking. Use one for ten minutes a day, and add real conversations with a coach, tutor or exchange partner so the words come out when someone talks to you.

Reading about Spanish is the easy part. Speaking it is where we come in.

“Not only have I become better in Spanish comprehension but I can now think in Spanish rather than translate from English. […] The years I spent on other Spanish courses were not as effective as this course.”

“Working with Hannah has dramatically improved my Spanish as well as my confidence in using Spanish in actual conversations.”
