We’re preparing guacamole (el guacamole, pronounced gwah-ah-moh-leh) from scratch the Mexican way. You can’t say we didn’t have fun on our Mexico trip! Do you like guacamole? Let us know in the comments.

Make guacamole… the Mexican way

Here’s what we used for our guacamole recipe:

  • avocado 🥑 – el aguacate (ah-gwah-kah-teh)
  • lime 🍋 – el limón (lee-mohn) (in Mexico) / la lima (lee-mah)
  • onion 🧅 – la cebolla (seh-boh-yah)
  • cilantro 🌿 – el cilantro (see-lahn-troh)
  • salt 🧂 – la sal (sahl)
  • tomato 🍅 – el tomate (toh-mah-teh) / el jitomate (hee-toh-mah-teh) (in Mexico)

It’s time to make guacamole!

How to make guacamole:

Corta el aguacate en trozos pequeños. Corta y pica la cebolla y los tomates (también en trozos pequeños). Mézclalos en un plato hondo. Puedes usar un tenedor para aplastar el aguacate hasta que se convierta en una pasta. Exprime el limón y agrega el jugo a la mezcla. Pica el cilantro en trocitos muy pequeños y añádelo también a la mezcla. ¡No olvides de mezclar! Agregue sal. Pruebalo. ¿Te gusta?

Se puede comer con totopos (tortilla chips), tacos, tortillas, huevos, frijoles, arroz, o como gustes. El guacamole es una receta muy típica de México.

When it comes to talking about food in Spanish, it’s equally important to know which verbs to use. Here’s a list of useful Spanish verbs for cooking and eating:

  • comer (to eat): Tengo ganas de comer un sándwich de rosbif. (I feel like having a roast beef sandwich for lunch.)
  • beber (to drink): Solo bebo café por la mañana. (Solo bebo café por la mañana.)
  • cocinar (to cook): ¿Cómo vas a cocinar el pavo? (How are you going to cook the turkey?)
  • preparar (to prepare): Mamá está preparando mi plato favorito. (Mom is cooking my favorite dish.)
  • cortar (to cut, to slice): ¿Puedes cortar la fruta? (Can you slice the fruit?)
  • picar (to chop): Pica el pimiento en trocitos. (Chop the pepper into small pieces.)
  • pelar (to peel): Miguel used a knife to peel the orange. (Miguel usó un cuchillo para pelar la naranja.)
  • pedir (to order): Voy a pedir tacos de pescado. (I’m going to order fish tacos.)
